Antineuronal antibodies in autistic children: relation to blood mercury

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Autism is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired communication, social interaction and imagination that is often accompanied by repetitive and stereotyped behavior. It develops before the 36 month of age and persists into adulthood causing life long disability. The prevalence of autism has surged in recent years. The etiology and pathogenesis of autism is not well understood. In view of the possible multifactorial cause, autism can occur as a result of environmental neurotoxicant mercury (Hg) exposure in presence of genetic predisposition. Several sources of toxic Hg exposure in children have been reported in literature: (1) ethyl mercury, which has been the subject of recent scientific inquiry in relation to the controversial pediatric vaccine preservative thimerosal; (2) methyl mercury, is most commonly the result of consumption of contaminated food, particularly fish; (3) inorganic Hg, through the use of topical Hg-based skin creams and in infant teething powders; (4) metalic Hg in dental amalgams, which release Hg vapors. In 2006, Palmer and associates reported that for each 1.000 Ib of environmentally released Hg, there was a 61% increase in the rate of autism. Thus, a logic step is to identify the source of Hg exposure in the child population and consider prevention and control of environmental pollution. Recently, thimerosal was removed from the vaccines in USA, but it is still present in developing countries. However, the issue of the risk of vaccination remains a philosophical one, since to date, the advantage of this policy have not been refuted, while the risk for autoimmune disease has Original article

The Possible Association between Elevated Levels of Blood Mercury and the Increased Frequency of Serum Anti-myelin Basic Protein Auto-antibodies in Autistic Children
Background: Autism can occur as a result of a complex interaction between environmental factors and genetic predisposition. Mercury is a neurotoxicant and it is one of the main environmental triggers for autoimmunity. The underlying pathogenic mechanism in autoimmune disorders is the formation of auto-antibodies. Brain specific autoantibodies are elevated in a subgroup of autistic children. We ...
متن کاملMaternal antineuronal antibodies and risk of childhood autism spectrum disorders: A case-control study.
BACKGROUND The etiology of autism is complex, and may involve the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Recent studies suggested an association between maternal immune response and this disorder. METHODS Forty-nine women with autistic children (cases) were studied in comparison with 73 women with normal children (controls). After interviewing for sociodemographic and clinical...
متن کاملDetection of antinuclear and antilaminin antibodies in autistic children who received thimerosal-containing vaccines.
Autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder, may involve autoimmune pathogenesis. Since mercury is potentially a risk factor for autoimmunity, we conducted a study of mercury-induced antinuclear and antilaminin antibodies in autistic and normal children who had been pre-administered with thimerosal-containing vaccines. Laboratory analysis by different immunoassays showed that the serum level of these...
متن کاملAutism: a form of lead and mercury toxicity.
AIM Autism is a developmental disability characterized by severe deficits in social interaction and communication. The definite cause of autism is still unknown. The aim of this study is to find out the relation between exposure to Lead and/or mercury as heavy metals and autistic symptoms, dealing with the heavy metals with chelating agents can improve the autististic symptoms. METHOD Blood a...
متن کاملAnti-metallothionein IgG and levels of metallothionein in autistic families.
Metallothioneins (MTs) are a family of small proteins containing 61-68 amino acids with an unusually high concentration of cysteine. MT-1, the most functional and active MT in humans, has the ability to react with and enhance the detoxification of a number of metals including zinc, mercury, copper and cadmium. MT dysfunction may result, then, in many of the aetiological syndromes observed in au...
